What Is Coast FIRE? A Plain-English Guide
Coast FIRE is the point where your existing investments will grow into a full retirement nest egg on their own — without another dollar from you. Here is how it works and why it matters.
Most people think financial independence is all-or-nothing: grind until you have enough to never work again. Coast FIRE is the milestone in between — and it arrives much sooner than full retirement.
What Coast FIRE actually means
You hit Coast FIRE when the money you have already invested will compound into your full retirement number by the time you retire — even if you never invest another dollar. From that point on, your portfolio is on autopilot. You still cover today's expenses, but you no longer have to save for retirement. Compound growth does the rest.
A simple example
Say you will need $1.25 million to retire at 65, and your investments earn about 7% a year (roughly 4% after inflation). At age 35, you would only need about $390,000 invested today for it to coast to $1.25M by 65. Reach that number and you are Coast FIRE — three decades early.
Why it is such a powerful milestone
- It lowers the pressure. Once you are coasting, any job that covers your living costs is enough. You can downshift, switch careers, or take a sabbatical.
- It arrives early. Because compounding does the heavy lifting over decades, the coast number is a fraction of the full FI number.
- It is motivating. It turns an abstract, far-off goal into a concrete, reachable target.
How to find your number
Three inputs decide it: your target retirement spending, your expected real return, and how many years until you retire. The fastest way is to use a free Coast FIRE calculator — plug in your numbers and see your coast date instantly.
The catch
Coast FIRE assumes you leave your investments untouched and your return assumptions hold. Markets are lumpy, so build in a margin of safety and keep an emergency fund, so you are never forced to sell at the bottom.
Coast FIRE is not the finish line — it is the moment the finish line becomes inevitable. And for most people, it is a lot closer than they think.
