Module 1: Foundations & Mindset
Why most people never build wealth
Most people believe wealth comes from a bigger paycheck. It doesn't. Plenty of people earning $250,000 are broke, and plenty of teachers and nurses retire millionaires. The difference isn't income — it's what you keep and what you do with it.
This course is a system for keeping more and growing it on autopilot. But systems only stick when the mindset underneath them is right, so we start there.
The three traps
Trap 1: Lifestyle inflation. Every raise gets absorbed by a nicer car, a bigger apartment, more subscriptions. Income rises; net worth doesn't move. The trap is invisible because nothing feels wrong — you're just "living a little better." Meanwhile the gap between earning and keeping never widens.
Trap 2: Treating saving as leftovers. "I'll save whatever's left at the end of the month." Nothing is ever left. The entire course flips this: future-you gets paid first, automatically, before a dollar is spent.
Trap 3: Waiting to feel ready. People delay investing until they "understand it" or "have enough." But the cost of waiting is brutal — because of compounding, the dollars you invest in your twenties and thirties do the heaviest lifting of your entire life. Starting small now beats starting big later.
The one shift
Here it is: stop measuring money by income, and start measuring it by the gap between what you earn and what you spend — then put that gap to work.
That gap, invested consistently, is the entire game. A modest income with a wide gap builds more wealth than a high income with no gap. You control the gap with two levers (spend less, earn more) and you grow it with one engine (investing). Everything in this course serves those three things.
What the next six modules do
- Foundations — your scoreboard (net worth) and your speed (savings rate).
- Map your money — find the gap and widen it without feeling deprived.
- Eliminate debt — stop compounding from working against you.
- Build a safety net — so emergencies never set you back.
- Invest on autopilot — the evidence-based engine that does the growing.
- Reach financial independence — your FI number, your Coast FIRE date, and a one-page plan.
By the end you'll have built real tools — a net-worth tracker, a spending plan, a debt-payoff plan, and a written wealth plan — not just read about them.
Your task
Before any numbers, write down your honest answer to one question: what do you actually want money to buy you? Not the car — the life. Time with family? The freedom to quit a job you hate? The ability to take a risk? Write two or three sentences. This is your North Star, and we'll make it concrete in lesson 4. Everything else is just math in service of that answer.
